The
Center for Community Journalism and Development
(CCJD) is a media development organization that provides a platform
for dialogue and exchange between local news media and citizens on
matters and issues that impact on their communities through
journalism for empowerment. The CCJD builds capacities in
news reporting and in developing media-citizen engagement
mechanisms. It likewise strengthens community-based media networks
and journalism initiatives anchored on the principles of public
journalism that promotes the idea that the news belongs to the
people and that the news should lead to the solution of local
problems.
It also works for the safety of community
journalists through the Asia-Pacific office of
the International News
Safety Institute (INSI),
a non-profit coalition of media organizations around the world
dedicated to the protection of journalists everywhere by providing
hostile environment, first aid and basic life support, and trauma
awareness training and advocacy.
The CCJD is a founding member of the Freedom
Fund for Filipino Journalists (FFFJ) which was established to
provide economic and legal support to families of slain
journalists. The other members of FFFJ are
the Center for Media
Freedom and Responsibility (CMFR), Kapisanan ng mga Brodkasters ng
Pilipinas (KBP), Philippine Press Institute (PPI), and Philippine Center for Investigative
Journalism (PCIJ).
Together with the Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR), MindaNews, and National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP), the CCJD is also working to increase the capacity of journalists, civil society and the public in selected areas in thePhilippinesto expose corrupt behavior in the public sector and to promote anti-corruption best practices.
It
conducts seminars and training workshops on public journalism,
media outreach, role of media in democracy, media and governance,
journalists’ safety and security in thePhilippinesand in the
Southeast Asian region. It also established regional and
provincial networks of journalists and media organizations around
thePhilippineswhose work focuses on encouraging greater citizen
participation in governance.
The CCJD was registered onOctober 11, 2001 with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as a non-stock, non-profit organization.
The
CCJD also is the convener of Agenda 5 on media of the Philippine
Urban Forum that serves as a platform for dialogue and convergence
of good urban governance and secure tenure initiatives. It works
throughout thePhilippinesbut also has ongoing cooperative
undertakings with the Kuala Lumpur-based The Urban Governance
Initiative (TUGI) of the UNDP. One of the planned activities
of this undertaking is the development of a Southeast Asian media
network on governance. It is a founding member of the Freedom
Fund for Filipino Journalists (FFFJ) and the Forum on Democratic
Options (FDO).
Its projects are supported by the UNDP-Manila, The Ford Foundation, the United States Agency for International Development, and the Friedrich Naumann Stiftung, among others

Develop a new journalistic paradigm that would enable citizens and commnities shape the news agenda by enhancing the skills of community journalists and raising the professional standards of media.
Encourage greater citizens participation in governance and civic life through public journalism intitiatives.
Increase popular understanding of peace, development, social justice and governance issues through better and involved journalism that would contribute to policy reform.
